- Sabudana/tapioca- 1/2 bowl
- Jaggery- 1.5 bowls
- Fresh grated coconut- 2 bowls
- Cardamom- 3 nos.
- Cashew nuts- 6 nos.
- Raisins- 10 nos
- Almond- 6 nos
- Ghee- 1 tbsp
Serves
4 to 5 adults
Preparation
- Pressure cook chana dal/ split bengal gram till soft but not mushy. I cooked for 3 whistles and 4 minutes in simmer.
- Cut the dry fruits like almond and cashew in to pieces. Keep it aside.
- Powder cardamom very finely and keep it aside.
Method
- Add fresh grated coconut in to a mixer and grind to fine paste adding 1/2 bowl of water. Pour it on to a strainer and squeeze first extract coconut milk. It should be at least 1 bowl.
- Add the squeezed coconut in to mixer and grind to fine paste again adding 1/2 bowl of water. Pour it on to strainer and squeeze second extract coconut milk. This milk should be at least 1.5 bowl. Keep both first and second extracted coconut milk separately.
- Now add tapioca/sabudana in to a small vessel and cook it in low flame adding 1 bowl of water. It gets cooked very fast, within 5 minutes. Don't worry if it looks mushy.
- Heat a vessel in which you would like to prepare payasam, add second extract coconut milk and jaggery. Cook it till jaggery melts and then add cooked chana dal. Let chana dal get cooked well in jaggery syrup at least for 5 minutes.
- At this stage add cooked tapioca/sabudana and mix well. Bring this to boil. After adding tapioca payasam gets thickened.
- Now add first extracted coconut milk and stir. As it starts boiling, just switch off the flame. Chana dal payasam is almost done.
- In a pan add a tea spoon of ghee, add cashews, almonds and raisins one after the other. Fry them till golden brown.
- Now add the fried dry fruits and cardamom powder to the payasam.
- So here goes the yammy chana dal payasam...ready for serving....
Note
- While cooking chana dal, make sure each grain is separate and not mushy.
- Tapioca thickens the payasam. Without tapioca, payasam will be of running of consistency.
- Fresh coconut milk enhances the taste of payasam, in it's absence you can use store bought coconut milk as well.
