My mother has been collecting vintage head vases (also known as "Betty Lous," named after designer Betty Lou Nichols) for years. Individually they're beautiful but in a row they're demure eyes can appear a bit sinister. Regardless, they cause memories of barbie to bubble up inside of me. Creating bouquets to top these ladies' fancy hats is unbelievably fun, as it forces you to imagine the head vase's personality, and what bouquet will match their outfit best. Or at least that's what went through my head. "Oh, this one is on its way to a swanky cocktail party," I think for one, "And this one is attending a garden wedding." Lord I need to get outside! Anyway, they're absolutely lovely and a wonderful surprise in a guest bathroom or on a small side table. They can range from $25 to $2000 depending on their make and rarity. The actual Betty Lou Nichols vases are the most expensive. My mother has none by Betty Lou Nichols, and I have to admit that her dolls and their wide-set eyes give off an "alien" vibe. Antique Head Vases sells a wide array of very high quality head vases, but they all run on the expensive side. I recommend large flea markets, such as the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, to find better bargains and opportunities to haggle. Or you can just ask an elderly relative if they have any hiding in the attic, you never know! Below are my favorites of my mother's (believe it or not, there are more), enjoy!
