COCKTAILS AND CANAPES

This past Wednesday I got to join my lovely editor from Refinery29 (and fellow redhead) to shoot the roof top poolside going away party for Jose Andres, the more magician than chef at the SLS hotel in West Hollywood. Originally from Spain, Andreas' is credited with bringing tapas to the US with his DC restaurant Jaleo, but more recently has entered the world of molecular gastronomy with his innovations at The Bazaar. The hors d'oeuvres at the party showed a happy blend of both, with a savory chicken and sausage paella, served beside an ingenious shrimp cocktail. Just to add to the whimsy, the weather was bordering on apocalyptic with clouds out of a rococo painting, lightening, a rainstorm, and a double rainbow. No matter, I just hid in a cabana and collected plates of paella. Yum!

That Paella I mentioned.

The shrimp cocktail with a cocktail sauce eye dropper you squeeze directly into your mouth.

The big Paella pan; the key to good paella is the heat distribution.

The ridiculous clouds before the storm.
Mussels in a paprika broth with aioli.

Stalker shot of Jose!
The cone station.

My favorite of the duo, salmon roe served with dill creme fraiche.
Also delicious, a simple guacamole with diced tomato.

The double rainbow.
And the PR rep running for cover.
