Horse gram Chutney- In Udupi style
As South Indians are Rice lovers, here one can find hundreds of varieties in rice accompaniments like rasam, sambar, goojju, chutney, palya, gasi, avil and it goes on. Udupi is not different, rice and dishes prepared using rice are very popular here. Any side dish, gravy or non gravy goes well with rice. Not only vegetables, lentils and legumes too are used to prepare chutneys, one such a chutney I am going to post today. Believe me this is a must try recipe!!!!
Ingredients for horse gram chutney
- Horse gram/huruli kalu- 1 bowl
- Fresh grated coconut- 1 bowl
- Red chilly (byadagi) - 1 or 2
- Urad dal/Split black gram- 1 tbsp
- Curry leaves- Few
- Salt - 3/4 tbsp
- Tamarind- one small gooseberry size
- Oil- 2 tbsp
Ingredients for seasoning
- Mustard seeds- 1 tbsp
- Urad dal- 1/2 tbsp
- Red chilly - 1
- Oil- 1 tbsp
- Serves
- 2 to 3 adults.
Method
- In a pan add a tea spoon of oil, urad dal/split black gram, red chilly and fry them in medium heat. Once the urad dal changes color add horse gram and fry them till the horse grams puff up.
- In a mixer, blend the fried items of step 1 along with grated coconut, tamarind, salt and water. It should be ground coarsely not to a fine paste.
- In a seasoning pan add oil, mustard seeds, urad dal and red chilly. When mustard seeds splutter add it to the chutney. Tampering is optional for this chutney.
Horse gram chutney is ready to serve.
