Kate Spade White Ware
White wear is ubiquitous in the world of tabletop. It refers to the white bowls and plates you'll see in almost every commercial, editorial, tv show and cookbook. It's allure is that white can be contemporary but traditional at the same time, and it never overpowers the food. White is the safe choice for a reason, it's inclusive. You'll never alienate someone with a simple white plate.
But how do you make white plates and bowls un-boring? They're so…white. Like in menswear, you have a certain silhouette you stick with, but you play with the details. Square or round? Scalloped edge or plain? Unglazed or glazed? There are a multitude of details you can tweak to make a simple white plate anything but.
Enter Kate Spade. I directed a cereal commercial recently and we were on the hunt for the perfect cereal bowl. It needed to be just the right size, fit into a young, hip woman's kitchen, and still let the cereal be the star. Staring at a table of 20 white bowls, I zeroed in on these beauties. "So coooool," I cooed. Nuala, the head of the art department, and I gushed over them for at least 15 minutes. The perfect blend of understated cool and classic lines, I love the no fuss quality of these pieces. I hope you love them too!
