At this point, I'm pretty sure you can grill anything. Well, ice cream could be problematic. But yams? They are no problem. I don't know why it never occurred to me, especially since I love yams, but yams on the grill are my new favorite thing. I mix together my favorite spices, add a little olive oil, and these guys are ready to go. Just be careful that they don't slip through the grates when you're grilling. I've raised my fist ruefully one too many times over a lost yam.
Grilled Yams
For 4
2 large yams
2 teaspoons cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons black pepper
3 tablespoons olive oil
Slice yams into rounds about 1/4 inch thick (thinner if you like them crispier). Combine dry ingredients. Dress the yam slices in olive oil and mix with the dry ingredients, stirring to evenly coat. Grill on high heat for 3 minutes per side (there should be deep grill marks, and the yams should be soft and crispy at the edge, not hard).
